Teaching Introductory Improvisation
Below are the materials I used to teach improvisation to the Jazz Band students at my town's middle school. At rehearsals I would play with them, show them a PowerPoint, and do exercises to enforce my teaching. Below are a few of the PowerPoint presentations and below those the files with measure-long licks that the students themselves created. My goal in their course of study was for them to individually be able to take a solo and as a group to have written a song. By the end of the semester, they were working on picking their best licks as a group and putting them together to create their very own song.
